WELCOME TO THE HINSDALE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

HISTORY PAGE

The purpose of this page is to help you learn interesting facts and tidbits
about the history of Hinsdale County and Lake City.  Today, Lake City is the
only incorporated town in the county and is also the county seat.  There are
three other parts of the county recognized today that have historical
significance - the Upper Piedra (south end of the county), the Cathedral area
(northeast part of the county) and the Rio Grande area (central part of the
county) - and, yes, that is the beginning of THE Rio Grande River.  There are
many old mining towns in the surrounding area (many had post offices) that
are no longer in existence.  Some may still have remnants of structures left,
but most have little trace left of their former existence.
