| WELCOME TO THE HINSDALE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY HISTORY PAGE The purpose of this page is to help you learn interesting facts and tidbits about the history of Hinsdale County and Lake City. Today, Lake City is the only incorporated town in the county and is also the county seat. There are three other parts of the county recognized today that have historical significance - the Upper Piedra (south end of the county), the Cathedral area (northeast part of the county) and the Rio Grande area (central part of the county) - and, yes, that is the beginning of THE Rio Grande River. There are many old mining towns in the surrounding area (many had post offices) that are no longer in existence. Some may still have remnants of structures left, but most have little trace left of their former existence. WHEN EXPLORING THE HIGH COUNTRY - PLEASE - PLEASE DO NOT ENTER MINE TUNNELS OR SHAFTS. THEY ARE VERY DANGEROUS, MAY CONTAIN NO AIR OR POISONOUS GASES AND THE TIMBERS ARE ROTTED AND MAY COLLAPSE AT ANY TIME. If there are areas of the county not listed here and you would like to know more about them, please let us know. Enjoy the following: Alferd Packer - Mr. Packer, the infamous cannibal, whose victims are buried about two and one-half miles south of Lake City, is the topic of discussion on many web sites.
