September 29 Was A Very Significant Day for the Historical Society!
Upon checking the mail on Saturday, September 29, a letter from the Communities Foundation of Texas contained a check for $30,000! Thanks to John and Jane Wilson, major donors to the foundation, this very generous gift will now allow the Historical Society Board to start construction of the proposed Transportation Building which is described below.
2nd Annual Packer Vegetable Patch Potato Chowder - September 27
What a great day to enjoy the fruits of Bob and Dana Lozano's labors from the Packer Potato Patch in Helen's Garden on the south side of the museum building. We couldn't have accomplished the Packer's Potato Chowder event without the outstanding cooks who managed to produce delicious soup and cornbread plus those who loaned large crock pots, helped with the set up, kept the soup line supplied, cheerfully served the soup, sold the cookbooks, sold our new railroad maps and then cleaned up. Thank you, Ceil and Mort Weir, Carol Perry, Sandra and Ron Yates, Jane and Tom Swanson, Roxanne Darnell, Joan Nelson, Shirley Williams, Jennifer Sparks, Mary Rheinhardt, Jerry and Kay Harmon, Ben Hake and Ray Blaum Over $400 was raised through donations in addition to other funds raised from sales of the museum's Memorable Cooks cookbook and the map of the railroad that ran from Sapinero to Lake City from 1889 to 1933. We are looking forward to next year's potato harvest, beautiful blue sky, colorful leaves, crisp sunny weather and tasty potato chowder. Please click here to see photos of the second annual event.
Board Elections - August 21 Meeting
Mark McClung is our newly elected member of the Board of Directors for a two year term. Mark is moved to Lake City in August of 2005 from Abilene, Texas. He and his wife Mindy own a tree maintenance business, Outdoor Enterprises, LLC. Mark has had a life long interest in western lore and legend. Mark is a welcome addition to the Board and has been assigned the responsibility of overseeing the condition of the museum building and grounds to ensure any problems that may arise are addressed promptly.
Ray Blaum was also elected to the Board for his own two year term, having replaced Celia Swank who resigned earlier this year.
Jim Rhinehart and David Flynt were re-elected for another two year term as seasonal representatives on the Board.
Grant Houston was re-elected as President, with the stipulation that someone else needs to take the leadership role next year; Bob Scott was elected Vice President, Larry Iiams is the Treasurer and Ray Blaum, Secretary.
Sincere appreciation by the Board was given to Lynn Olson who is going off the board due to the press of other business. Lynn will remain our accountant keeping track of our financial accounts and preparing monthly reports for Board meetings.
First Annual "Back in Thyme" Victorian Tea a Huge Success!
On Tuesday, August 7, at 1 PM, a "Back in Thyme Victorian Tea," a ladies high tea, was held in Helen's Garden adjacent to the Museum. The event was sold out well in advance and was a huge success. Fifty local ladies got into the spirit of the event by wearing of large hats and period dress for the social highlight of the season. Proceeds from the tea will be used to maintain the Garden in memory of Helen Ewart, a benefactor of the Museum.
The event was organized by Jane Swanson with the assistance of Dana Lozano (a niece of Helen Ewart), Ceil Weir, Sandra Yates and Leslie Risatti who also acted as hostesses serving tea and assorted period delicacies to the assembled ladies. Their husbands, Tom Swanson, Bob Lozano, Mort Weir, Ron Yates and Jim Risatti, who were relegated to behind working the scene, were very helpful in setting up the event and assisting with preparing the tea and food trays. It also seems that behind every good woman is a good man. Thanks to all for starting this, hopefully, new annual event.
Sadly, Helen Ewart passed away on July 31 at the age of 95. The tea is an appropriate remembrance of Helen. If you would like to contribute to the upkeep of Helen's Garden, please send your checks to "Helen's Garden", care of the Hinsdale County Historical Society, PO. Box 353, Lake City, CO 81235
The Victorian Tea in 2008 is scheduled for August 11. The first tea was a sell out so be sure to get your tickets early!
New Transportation Equipment Display Building Proposed
The Board of Directors have applied from several grants to help fund a proposed 1776 square foot display building for historic transportation equipment that is currently either being stored in the open and rapidly deteriorating or within the Museum and taking up valuable display space. Currently only about 10-15% of the Museum's artifacts are able to be displayed at one time to the public. The new building will also have an area depicting an early blacksmith shop. The display building will be of a historic design using some historic material currently being stored in the basement of the Museum and cost anywhere between an estimated $135,000 and $150,000. The Historical Society has approximately $100,000 in cash available to apply toward the building and is anticipating other funds will be granted from five other organizations they have applied to. If funding is available, the building should be finished sometime this year or early next year. Click here for drawings of the proposed new building.
Bob Matthews of Mountain View Technical Services has graciously donated his time in designing the building and assisting in negotiating with potential contractors for the construction of the building. The Board of Directors and members of the Historical Society owe Bob a large debt of gratitude.
